I’m Not Smiling Because

A friend recently expressed to me their disapproval of Greta Thunberg because she was “so blooody miserable”. I was shocked that someone I had known for a long time would hold such an opinion.

My first reaction was that Thunberg has every right to be angry and not smile about the lack of action on climate change. That it’s adults who are acting grievously irresponsibly and so it’s left to people like her, children, to speak the impolite scientific advice. My second reaction was, who is anyone else to police how people should express their emotions?

A wise teacher once told me to pay attention to my anger and to the things which made me angry. That it was these things which would help me to identify broken things and give strength me to respond. This was piercingly accurate advice and at times I am guilty of being too comfortable and not being angry enough about the things which matter.

This is a post to celebrate some of the not smiling women and girls, who I appreciate, support in solidarity, and who give me inspiration that all is not lost.
